Guide
To Animated Art
Cel - The
actual piece of material on which cartoon characters are rendered.
Each cel is a sheet of clear acetate either 10 1/2" x 12
1/2"(a twelve-field cel) or 16 1/2" x 13 1/2"(a
sixteen field cel) in size. The term "cel" is derived
from "celluloid nitrate", an early form of the material
used in the animation industry until the mid-1940's.
Production Cel
- A one of a kind hand painted cel that has actually been used
to create an animated film or cartoon. A series of production
cels were photographed in sequential order creating the illusion
of movement. A production cel is a piece of the action.
Limited Edition
Cel - All limited edition cels are also hand painted, but
were not actually used to create a film or cartoon. The limited
edition cel is created for the express purpose of fine art and
offers the collector the opportunity to acquire their favorite
characters in ideal, memorable and special interest poses. They
are generally signed and numbered by the artist and laid upon
either a lithographic or photographic background.
Sericels - The
sericel refers to the process of serigraphing onto a cel. Serigraphing
is a silk screen process. To produce a serigraph cel, a hand-cut
master screen is prepared for each color, from original studio
art. The serigrapher applies each color separately, one screen
at a time, in perfect registration. The result is an original
work of art.
Drawings
- The beginning artwork prior to the painting of a cel. The
animator must draw 24 individual drawings to create one second
of film. These consist of rough drawings, done by key animators,
to establish pose and action, and clean up drawings or retracings,
done by clean-up artists, to produce finished art ready to be
transfered to a cel.
